The Changing Face of Richmond Hill: Home Prices and Trends

Richmond Hill is a suburban community located in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. The population was 107,591 at the 2010 census. Richmond Hill is one of the wealthiest communities in New York State and has been for many years. It is home to some of the most prestigious schools in Nassau County, including The Ketcham School and Saint John's School.

The history of Richmond Hill can be traced back to 1683 when Dutch settlers established a farm on what is now known as Old Mill Road. In 1714, English settlers arrived and began to develop what would become known as "the village". By 1800, Richmond Hill had grown to encompass 1,000 acres and boasted a population of 1,500 residents.

In 1853, entrepreneur Samuel Tilden purchased 160 acres of land in what would become known as "the new town" (now called Old Mill Road). Tilden developed this area into one of the most fashionable residential areas in Long Island with streets lined with stately homes. His success led to the development of "the new town" (now called Garden City) which also became known for its high-end residences.

In 1870, wealthy businessman George Waring built a mansion on what is now known as Park Avenue South which served as his home until his death in 1895. Waring was instrumental in developing both "the old town" (now called Glen Cove) and "the new town" (now called Garden City). He also helped finance several important civic projects including construction of Saint John's Church and The Ketcham School which are both still standing today.

Richmond Hill continued to grow throughout the early 1900s thanks largely to its proximity to Manhattan which made it an ideal place for affluent families who wanted access to all that New York had to offer without having to live downtown or on Long Island's rural periphery. By 1930, Richmond Hill boasted a population of 25,000 residents and had become one of Nassau County's most prosperous communities.

During World War II, many families moved into Richmond Hill due its proximity to military bases such as Fort DeRussy and Fort Totten which were used by the United States Army Air Forces during the war years. After World War II ended, many families returned home but others chose to move into Richmond Hill due its excellent schools and thriving economy which was fueled by growth in industries such as banking and telecommunications. Today, Richmond Hill remains one of Nassau County's most affluent communities with a median household income well above $100k per year.
