The city was founded in 1881 and named for General James E. Anderson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas. The city's early economy was based on cotton production; however, this has since declined and Anderson now relies more on service industries such as health care and information technology.
Today Anderson is home to a variety of businesses and residential neighborhoods. The downtown area features several restaurants and shops as well as a public square with a fountain and benches.
