Mentone, TX

Mentone is a small town located in Montgomery County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin- Round Rock metropolitan area.

The town was founded in 1887 by J.D. Mentone and named for his son, who had died in a hunting accident. The town originally consisted of a post office, two stores, and a population of about 50 people. In 1889 Mentone became the county seat of Montgomery County and began to grow rapidly as more people moved into the area to work in nearby Round Rock and Georgetown. By 1910 Mentone had a population of 1,500 and boasted four businesses: two banks, two grocery stores, and a meat market/butcher shop.

In 1921 Mentone annexed land from Georgetown to form its current limits; this expansion made it the largest city in Montgomery County at that time. In 1929 Mentone became an incorporated municipality; at that time it had a population of 3,000 people and 20 businesses. The city continued to grow throughout the 1930s; by 1940 it had 5,000 residents and 50 businesses. During World War II many men were drafted into military service and many women left their jobs to take care of their families; as a result Mentone's population decreased by half between 1940 and 1950 (from 5,000 to 2,500). However, by 1960 Mentone's population had increased again (to 4,900) due to an influx of new residents from surrounding areas who were attracted by the city's low cost of living and its proximity to major cities such as Austin (30 miles away) and Houston (60 miles away).

Today Mentone is still considered one of the smaller cities in Montgomery County; however its economy has diversified since 1960 thanks largely to its position as headquarters for several large companies such as Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company (formerly Lockheed Aircraft Corporation), Motorola Solutions Inc., AT&T Mobility Services Inc., Intel Corporation North America Operations Center (formerly Intel Computer Systems Division), McKesson Corporation North America Headquarters Building #2180 & #2181 respectively) , Texas Instruments Incorporated Headquarters Building #5100 & #5101 respectively), Capital One Financial Corporation North American Corporate Office Building #1010 & 1011 respectively), Dell Technologies Incorporated Headquarters Building #1200 & 1201 respectively), Symantec Corporation Headquarters Building #1100 & 1101 respectively) . These companies have created thousands of jobs for residents while also providing them with opportunities for advancement within their organizations . Today there are over 30 businesses located within city limits including restaurants , retail stores , medical offices , banks , insurance agencies , law firms etc . Many residents commute to work outside the city but enjoy living in close proximity to all these amenities .
