The town is situated on the eastern edge of Montgomery County and is bordered by the city of Conroe to the north and east, and by Houston to the south and west.
The history of Valley Mills can be traced back to 1892 when J.D. Hill founded a trading post on what would become known as Hill Road. The post became known as Hill's Store after J.D.'s son, Jim, took over operations in 1912. In 1916, Jim's son-in-law, A.C. "Dutch" Schreiner, opened Schreiner's General Store which became one of the town's main businesses for many years. Dutch Schreiner was also responsible for building most of the buildings in Valley Mills including Schreiner's General Store (now occupied by Lowe's), Hill Road School (now occupied by an animal clinic), and several homes on Main Street (now mostly vacant).
In 1948, A&P opened its first store in Valley Mills which helped to spur even more growth in the town over the next few years. Several other stores followed suit including Kmart which opened its doors in 1978 and Sears which opened its doors in 1981; both stores closed down within a few years due to competition from larger chains such as Walmart and Target which had begun opening up throughout Texas at this time period.
Today, Valley Mills is still considered to be a small town with a close-knit community feel; however, it has seen significant growth since 2000 when it was designated as an Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ). This designation allowed businesses located within the UEZ to receive tax breaks and other incentives aimed at boosting economic development; as a result, many new businesses have been established including restaurants such as Hometown Buffet & Grill and Starbucks along with several retail stores such as Home Depot and Lowe's . Additionally, several new homes have been built throughout the town providing residents with much needed housing options .
The future looks bright for Valley Mills with continued economic development coupled with efforts from local government officials to maintain its small-town character; if all goes according to plan , Valley Mills may soon become one of Montgomery County's most popular destinations!
