Huntington is a city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,726. The city is located on the north shore of Long Island and is part of the New York metropolitan area.

Huntington's history dates back to 1636 when it was settled by English Puritans led by John Winthrop. The area that would become Huntington was part of the tract granted to Winthrop and his followers by the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sir Edmund Andros. The first settlement in what would become Huntington occurred on September 11th 1636 when Reverend Thomas Hooker and twenty-one other settlers arrived from England aboard the Mayflower. They were welcomed by local Wampanoag Indians who helped them establish a settlement on what is now known as Castle Hill overlooking present day downtown Huntington.

The first recorded land transaction in what would become Huntington took place on October 12th 1637 when Nicholas Bayley purchased 1,000 acres from Governor Andros for £200 sterling (approximately $4,000 in today's currency). By 1700, there were approximately 100 families living in what would become Huntington. The town began to grow rapidly after 1760 when General George Washington stopped at Castle Hill while traveling through New England en route to take command of Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After spending two nights at Hooker's Tavern located on Castle Hill, Washington made a speech before departing for Boston on October 26th 1760 which helped spur growth in Huntington and throughout Suffolk County as a whole.

In 1851, railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt established one of his many railroads in Huntington which helped spur even more growth within the town over the next several decades. By 1900, there were approximately 2,500 residents living within what would become Huntington proper; however, due to its close proximity to both Manhattan and Brooklyn (both then part of New York City), much of this growth occurred outside of town boundaries along Route 27 which ran along present day Main Street (formerly called Broadway). This rapid population growth resulted in significant infrastructure needs such as roads; water supplies; schools; and churches which were all quickly developed or constructed during this time period.

In addition to serving as an important transportation hub , "The Boulevard" also became home to numerous businesses including banks ; department stores ; restaurants ; hotels ; movie theaters ; etc . In 1926 , construction began on another major artery within downtown Huntington – "The Avenue" –which connected "The Boulevard" with Park Avenue leading into downtown Boston . Although these two major arteries played an important role in facilitating rapid population growth within downtown Huntington over the years , they did not come without their share of challenges . For example: traffic congestion became increasingly common along "The Boulevard" due to increasing automobile ownership rates ; building facades suffered due to heavy wear & tear caused by heavy traffic ; etc . However , despite these challenges , both avenues remain heavily populated today thanks largely to their central location within downtown Huntingtin nd their ability provide easy access to virtually everything that a resident may need .
