Centreville is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 2,898 as of the 2010 census. Centreville is known for its antique shops and its proximity to Birmingham.
The history of Centreville can be traced back to 1825 when the land on which it sits was purchased by James Witherspoon. The town was founded in 1872 and named for Centre College, a Methodist school in Kentucky that had donated land for the town's establishment. In 1892, the Montgomery Railroad came through Centreville and spurred development of the town. By 1906, there were enough businesses to form a chamber of commerce and by 1910, the population had reached 1,000.
Today, Centreville is still a small town with many historic buildings remaining from its early days. The downtown area features several antique shops as well as restaurants and cafes. There are also several churches in the community including First Baptist Church (1872), United Methodist Church (1892), Grace Presbyterian Church (1906), and St John's Episcopal Church (1910). The Jefferson County School District serves students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade in Centreville schools.
