Childersburg, AL

Childersburg is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, located about 25 miles northeast of Birmingham. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Childersburg is known for its historic downtown district and its many antique shops.

The town was founded in 1818 by James Childers and named for his son, John Childers. The first business in the town was a store operated by James' brother-in-law, John McDonough. In 1821, the first courthouse was built on what is now Main Street. The original structure still stands and is used as a museum.

In 1827, Childersburg became the county seat of Marshall County when it replaced Wetumpka as the county's largest settlement. In 1840, a new courthouse was built on what is now State Street. This building still stands and is used as a museum. In 1853, the railroad came to Childersburg and changed everything forever. The town quickly grew into an important commercial center for Marshall County and surrounding areas. By 1900, Childersburg had become one of Alabama's most prosperous towns thanks to its thriving economy based on agriculture (especially cotton), railroads (including the Birmingham & Atlantic Railroad), manufacturing (including furniture factories), and service industries (including banks).

However, like many other small towns throughout Alabama during the Great Depression of the 1930s, things began to change for Childersburg when economic conditions worsened nationally in that decade. Many businesses closed their doors or moved away from town; others were forced to reduce staff or hours due to decreased sales volumes; and yet others went out of business altogether due to competition from larger cities or more industrialized areas nearby such as Birmingham or Tuscaloosa. As a result of these economic challenges over time – combined with increased development pressures brought about by suburbanization – much of what made Childersburg unique slowly disappeared over time: businesses closed down; downtown buildings fell into disrepair; homes were abandoned; and parts of town gradually became derelict neighborhoods inhabited only by drug addicts or crime gangs members who preyed upon those who remained trapped there by poverty or lack of opportunity.. However despite all this – especially given how rapidly things can change in today's economy – there are still some things that make Childerburh unique: its charming old downtown district with its many antique shops; its friendly community spirit; its strong sense of history which remains evident even today in places like the courthouse museums; and last but not least – its beautiful natural surroundings which make it an ideal place to live whether you're looking for peace & quiet or want access to all that nature has to offer..
