Daleville is a small town located in Dale County, Alabama. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dale County.
The town was founded in 1836 by James Dale and named for him. The first post office opened in 1837. The town grew rapidly as a railroad stop on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad line. By 1900, Daleville had a population of 2,000 and boasted several businesses including a cotton gin, grist mill, bank, hotel, and two newspapers.
In 1906, the town's cotton gin was destroyed by fire and it never recovered from that event. Many of the businesses closed down as a result; however, there has been some recent redevelopment in downtown Daleville with new businesses opening up since 2000.
Today, Daleville is still an important community due to its location on U.S Highway 231 just north of Birmingham and its proximity to Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (where African American pilots trained during World War II). There are several churches in downtown Daleville as well as a public library which offers programs for children throughout the year.
