Elkmont, AL

Elkmont is a small town located in Colbert County, Alabama. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Elkmont is known for its antique shops and its proximity to the Cahaba River.

The town of Elkmont was founded in 1837 by James and Martha Cahill. The Cahills were Irish immigrants who settled on a tract of land that was part of the grant given to General Andrew Jackson following his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. The town's name is derived from an elk that roamed the area prior to European settlement.

Elkmont has been home to several businesses over the years, including a cotton gin, a sawmill, and a grist mill. Today, there are only two businesses remaining in Elkmont: an antique store and a restaurant called "The General Store."

The antique store is one of the oldest businesses in Elkmont and has been owned by the same family for over 50 years. The store specializes in antiques from all over America, as well as items from Europe and Asia.

The General Store is also one of the oldest businesses in Elkmont. It opened its doors in 1892 as a general store selling groceries, hardware, and other items needed by farmers living nearby. Over time, it has expanded its inventory to include clothing, furniture, books, and other items related to home decorating and lifestyle choices for modern day people.

Today, most residents of Elkmont are employed outside of town; however there are still some who work within the community itself (e.g., at local restaurants). In addition to jobs outside of town, many residents also own their own businesses (e.g., real estate agents).
