Marion is a city located in Marion County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,821. The city is the county seat of Marion County and is included in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1819 by General James F. Fagan and named for his wife, Marion Cunningham Fagan. The first post office opened on October 1, 1819. The city's economy was based largely on agriculture until the early 20th century when it began to develop as a center for retail sales and manufacturing. In recent years Marion has experienced significant growth as a result of its proximity to Birmingham and its status as a bedroom community for workers in that larger city.
