Princeton is a suburban community located approximately 20 miles west of Birmingham and 25 miles east of Tuscaloosa. The community is bordered by Shelby County to the north and east, Limestone County to the south, and Walker County to the west. Major thoroughfares through Princeton include U.S. Route 31 (Jefferson Highway), Alabama State Route 154 (Old Montgomery Highway), and Alabama State Route 231 ( Huntsville Highway).

The history of real estate in Princeton can be traced back to 1892 when land was first surveyed for development purposes. In 1909, a plat for what would become known as Princeton was filed with the Shelby County Register of Deeds Office. The first homes were built in 1910 on land that had been donated by Drury Ladd and James Witherspoon Jr., two prominent citizens of Shelby County at that time. By 1920, there were approximately 100 homes in the community; however, due to World War I and subsequent economic conditions, development slowed down considerably during this time period.

Development resumed slowly after World War II as new home builders began to enter the market place; however, it wasn't until 1970 that significant growth occurred within Princeton due to its proximity to Birmingham and Tuscaloosa combined with its excellent schools and recreational opportunities available in nearby Lake View Park (now known as Blue Mountain Lake).
