Stapleton is a city located in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,824. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1892 and named for Colonel John A. Stapleton, an early settler in the area. The first businesses were a blacksmith shop and a general store. The railroad arrived in 1903 and Stapleton began to grow rapidly as a center for agriculture and commerce. The city's first school was built in 1904 and its first hospital opened in 1911. By 1920, Stapleton had a population of 2,000 and it had become the county seat of Shelby County.
During World War II, Stapleton was home to Camp Shelby (now known as Redstone Arsenal). More than 50,000 soldiers were stationed at Camp Shelby during the war years; it became one of the largest military installations west of the Mississippi River. After World War II ended, many veterans returned to civilian life and began new families; this led to increased demand for housing and stimulated growth in Stapleton throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1970, Interstate 65 was completed just north of town; this made transportation into town much easier for residents and businesses alike.
Today, Stapleton is still an important community with many businesses serving its residents both locally and statewide. The city has undergone several renovations over the years including new sidewalks being installed along Main Street in 2009; this project cost $1 million dollars overall! There are also plans underway to renovate City Hall which is expected to be completed by late 2013 or early 2014 at a cost of $2 million dollars
