Fort Huachuca, AZ

Fort Huachuca is a small military town located in the Sierra Vista area of Arizona. The town has a population of about 4,000 people and is home to the Army's Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). Fort Huachuca has been in operation since 1891 and has played an important role in American history.

The first settlers arrived in the area around 1876. The land that is now Fort Huachuca was part of the Mexican Cession of 1848. In 1881, Major General George Crook established a military post on the site and named it Camp Grant after his late commanding officer, Ulysses S. Grant. The post grew rapidly and by 1886 had a population of 1,500 soldiers and civilians. In 1890, Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of a permanent fort on the site and Camp Grant was renamed Fort Huachuca in honor of General Winfield Scott Hancock who had died earlier that year.

During World War II, Fort Huachuca served as headquarters for both the Fourth Army Air Force and Sixth Army Group. The post also played an important role in training troops for combat operations during the Korean War. After World War II, Fort Huachuca became home to various units responsible for defending America's borders against potential threats from abroad such as espionage activities by Soviet agents or hostile actions by communist forces operating within our own borders. Today, Fort Huachuca continues to play an important role in protecting America's interests both at home and abroad by providing training facilities for troops preparing for future conflicts.
