In 1875-76 Mormon settlers established a colony near present day Bullhead City on land purchased from the Apache Nation. In 1880-81 Colonel Edward Fitzgerald Beale established a trading post on what is now known as Beale Street (formerly called "Beale's Road"). The post became known as "Mohave" after Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce Indians surrendered at Fort Defiance on July 4th, 1877 following their unsuccessful attempt to cross the Colorado River into Arizona Territory from Oregon Territory.

By 1890 there were more than 1,000 people living in Mohave Valley and it had become one of Arizona's most important mining towns with mines stretching along both sides of US 93 as well as down both sides of SR 179 into Bullhead City and Kingman respectively. Mining declined sharply during World War I but picked up again after World War II when new methods such as underground mining were developed. By 1990 only a few small mines remained operational in Mohave Valley but tourism has become an important part of its economy with visitors coming for hiking trails, fishing opportunities, hot springs resorts, wineries and golf courses..
