Antioch is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 102,096. It is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, about 30 miles east of downtown San Francisco and 15 miles west of Oakland. The city is named after the ancient Mediterranean city of Antioch on the Orontes River.

The first European to visit Antioch was John C. Frémont, who passed through in 1846 on his way to survey the Pacific Railroad route from Sacramento to San Francisco. In 1851, an American settler named Daniel Burnham decided to build a town on the eastern side of the Orontes River and named it Burnhamstown after his friend and mentor George Bancroft. The town began to grow rapidly with arrival of workers building the Central Pacific Railroad line through town in 1869. In 1874, Antioch incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000 people.
