Canyon is a city located in eastern San Bernardino County, California. The population was estimated to be 106,098 as of the 2010 census. Canyon is known for its natural beauty and year-round mild weather. The city has been designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation since 2000.
The first Europeans to explore the area around present-day Canyon were Spanish missionaries in 1776. In 1851, Jedediah Smith passed through the area on his way to the gold fields of California. A few years later, John C. Frémont and his party traveled through the canyon on their way to establish an overland route from Oregon to California's Central Valley.
In 1887, Canyon was incorporated as a town with a population of 1,500 people. The town's economy was based on agriculture and livestock ranching until World War II, when defense industries began moving into the area and manufacturing began expanding rapidly. After World War II, commercial development increased rapidly in Canyon; today it is one of the most densely populated cities in Southern California with nearly every type of business imaginable.
