Durham is a city located in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area, in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 103,713. The city is named after Durham, England.

Durham has been called "the cultural and creative center of the East Bay" and "the Athens of the East Bay". The city has been home to several notable institutions such as UC Berkeley, Stanford University, and Duke University Medical Center. In addition to its cultural attractions, Durham is also home to some of the most expensive real estate in California.

The history of real estate in Durham can be traced back to 1851 when land was first subdivided in what would become downtown Durham. The earliest recorded sale occurred on December 20th that year when James Waddell sold 2 acres for $500 to John Stephens. By 1879 there were already 27 sales recorded in downtown Durham totaling $14,000. Sales increased rapidly throughout the 1880s reaching a high point in 1889 with 107 sales totaling $269,000. This rapid growth can be attributed to several factors including increasing immigration from China and Japan as well as an increase in construction due to new railroads being built through town.
