Escondido, CA

Escondido is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 129,911 at the 2010 census. Escondido is a suburban city adjacent to the city of San Diego and is part of the San Diego- Carlsbad- San Marcos metropolitan area.

The history of Escondido can be traced back to 1851 when two brothers, John and James McNally, settled on a tract of land along the Santa Ana River near present-day downtown Escondido. In 1866, McNally Brothers Land and Water Company was formed and began developing what is now downtown Escondido. The company built an irrigation system that allowed for the cultivation of citrus fruits and vegetables in addition to grapes, olives, and other crops. In 1889, the Southern Pacific Railroad came through town and established a depot; this helped spur even more development in downtown Escondido.

In 1909, William Wrigley Jr., founder of Wrigley's chewing gum fame, purchased land in northeast Escondido from Pomeroy Stewart for use as a golf course; this became known as "Wrigley Country." In 1924, Wrigley built his country home on this property which still stands today (it has been renamed "The Oaks").

In 1929, developers created what is now known as "Old Town" by demolishing much of downtown Escondido to make way for new residential neighborhoods; Old Town remains an active commercial district today. In 1936, construction began on Interstate 5 which ran through downtown Escondidgo; this freeway helped spur even more development in the suburbs surrounding San Diego.

During World War II (1939-1945), Camp Pendleton was established just north of Escondido near present-day Oceanside; tens of thousands of soldiers were stationed here during the war years which led to an increase in population around Camp Pendleton as well as throughout Escondidgo overall. After World War II ended (1945), many veterans returned home and started families; this led to another surge in population growth throughoutEscondidgo during the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1978, Congress passed legislation creating Mission Valley National Park which includes much of eastern San Diego County including portions ofEscondidgo Township.; since then visitation to Mission Valley has increased significantly which has had a positive impact on businesses throughout eastern San Diego County including those located inEscondidgo Township..

Today there are several major retail centers located within or nearEscondidgo Township including: South Coast Plaza(formerly Fashion Valley Mall), Westfield UTC(formerly UTC Mall), The Shops at Mission Valley(formerly Hillcrest Centre), Northpark Center(formerly Northgate Centre)and Santana Row(formerly Santana Row Shopping Center). Additionally there are numerous restaurants located within or near these retail centers including: Chipotle Mexican Grill(), Starbucks Coffee (), Jack Astor's (), Panera Bread (), Subway Sandwich Shop ()and Pizza Hut (). Furthermore there are numerous medical facilities located within or nearby ESCONDIDGO TOWNSHIPincluding: Sharp HealthCare System(), Dignity Health St Lukes Medical Center(), Scripps Mercy Hospital ()and Adventist Health System ().
