Grass Valley, CA

Grass Valley is a city located in Nevada County, California. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. Grass Valley is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Sacramento and 45 miles northwest of Reno.

The city's history can be traced back to 1854 when John Sutter established a settlement on the west bank of the American River called New Helvetia. In 1857, Swiss immigrant John Conrad built a mill near New Helvetia and named it after his homeland. The town that grew up around this mill became known as Grass Valley. In 1868, the railroad came to town and changed everything. Grass Valley began to grow rapidly as a result of its location on the rail line and its status as a supply center for mines in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains.

Today, Grass Valley is still an important commercial center for Nevada County with a diverse economy based largely on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The city has been home to several notable businesses including Hewlett-Packard Company (which originally developed HP's first computer lab in Grass Valley), Fidelity Investments (the largest mutual fund company in the world was founded in Grass Valley), and Wells Fargo Bank (the first national bank in Nevada County).

The real estate market in Grass Valley is characterized by moderate growth rates coupled with modest price appreciation over time. This has resulted in relatively stable prices over recent years despite strong demand from local residents and investors alike.
