Greenbrae, CA

Greenbrae is a small town located in Marin County, California. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. Greenbrae is known for its peaceful and picturesque setting, as well as its high-quality real estate.

The town of Greenbrae was founded in 1887 by George H. Smith and his wife, Flora Belle Smith. The couple had come to California from Ohio and were looking for a place to raise their family. They found the perfect spot in the hills above San Francisco Bay, and started building their home on a plot of land that they purchased from James Whelan.

George H. Smith was an entrepreneur who founded several businesses in Greenbrae during his lifetime, including the Smith Lumber Company and the Greenbrae Drug Company. He also served as mayor of Greenbrae for two terms (1914-1920 and 1924-1928). Flora Belle Smith was an accomplished artist who created many pieces of art using natural materials such as wood and clay. She also served as president of the Women's Club of Marin County (now known as Women's Foundation for National Historical Park) from 1922 to 1924.

Today, much of what makes Greenbrae unique remains unchanged: its idyllic setting atop rolling hills; its commitment to sustainability; and its strong community spirit. The town is home to several notable businesses and organizations, including Stinson Beach Golf Course (one of Northern California's oldest golf courses), The Children's Museum of San Francisco (which relocated to Greenbrae in 2006), Novato Community Library (the second largest public library system in Marin County), and The Wine Merchant (one of Northern California's oldest wine stores).

Green Brae has consistently ranked among the top towns in America for quality of life according to Forbes magazine magazine rankings published annually since 2007. In addition, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has consistently placed Green Brae among the top ten towns nationwide with the best values for housing, education, health care, crime rates and more since 2001!
