Hanford is a city located in Kings County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 36,098. Hanford is located east of Sacramento and north of Bakersfield.

Hanford was founded in 1883 by James F. Reed and named for his wife, Henrietta Safford Reed. The Reed brothers established a flour mill and sawmill on the banks of the Sacramento River. In 1886 they opened a general store which became Hanford's first business establishment. Hanford incorporated as a city in 1907 with a population of 1,500 people. The population increased to 5,000 by 1916 due to growth in agriculture and industry related to World War I.

The Great Depression caused economic hardship for Hanford; however, it rebounded quickly after World War II with new housing developments and businesses opening due to the high demand for goods produced during the war years. In 1961 Hanford annexed portions of neighboring cities including Arvin and Richland Hills creating an urbanized area with over 20,000 residents by 1970.

Today Hanford is home to several major industries including aerospace manufacturing (Boeing), pharmaceuticals (Pfizer), food processing (General Mills), silicon technology (Intel) and agriculture (DuPont Pioneer). These companies have helped make Hanford one of California's most prosperous cities with an annual median household income above $100,000 as well as significant job growth over the past decade.

Real estate has been an important part of Hanford's economy since its inception; however, until recently it has not experienced the same level of growth as other sectors such as manufacturing or technology related businesses.
