The Changing Face of Millbrae: Trends in Home Prices

Millbrae is a city located in northern San Mateo County, California. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. Millbrae is known for its high-end homes and affluent residents. It is also home to several corporate headquarters, including Levi Strauss & Co., Jarden Corporation, and Intersil Corporation.

The city of Millbrae was incorporated on February 8, 1908. The land for the city was purchased from James S. Clark by the Millbrae Land and Water Company, a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The company laid out the town site in 1879 and named it after John D. Rockefeller's mill in New York City. The original company president was Leland Stanford Jr., son of former Governor of California Leland Stanford Sr..

The railroad built a depot and shops near what is now the intersection of El Camino Real and Skyline Boulevard in order to serve passengers traveling between San Francisco and points east such as Sacramento and Los Angeles. A small community grew around the depot including a post office, general store, hotel, churches, schools and other businesses serving the needs of travelers on the railroad line as well as local residents who worked at or lived near the depot.

In 1915 Levi Strauss & Co., which had been founded in 1873 by Jacob Davis in San Francisco's Financial District, moved its operations to an adjacent tract that became known as "Levi's Hill". The new location offered more space for manufacturing as well as better access to transportation (the railroad still ran through town). By 1925 Levi Strauss had become one of San Mateo County's largest employers with more than 1,000 workers at its plant on Skyline Boulevard (now called El Camino Real).

As railroads declined in importance throughout the 20th century however, so did Millbrae's economy; by 1990 only 100 people were employed at Levi Strauss' plant (although employment has since increased again). In response to this decline various efforts have been made to revitalize Millbrae—in 2003 Mayor Susan Leal launched an economic development initiative called " Millbrae 2020" which has helped spur new business growth; additionally there have been efforts made by local residents to protect their historic neighborhoods from development (for example through grassroots organizing like Save Our Heritage East Bay)
