San Lorenzo is a city located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, in Alameda County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,946. The city has been home to successive Native American tribes since before the arrival of Europeans. The Spanish missionaries established Mission San Lorenzo in 1797 and it was secularized by the Mexican government in 1835. In 1849, a group of local businessmen formed the town's first public utility company and began providing water and electricity to residents.

In 1884, an earthquake destroyed much of downtown San Lorenzo including most of its commercial buildings. A few brick buildings from this period remain today; they are used for retail or office space. In 1906, a major fire destroyed most of downtown again; however, because many businesses had relocated to underground spaces during the earthquake earlier that year, only a few businesses were lost in this fire. After World War II ended and suburbanization began to take hold throughout California, San Lorenzo began experiencing rapid growth as new families moved into newly constructed homes near its borders with Newark and Union City.

Today's economy is based largely on technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook Inc., and Intel Corporation which have established regional headquarters in San Lorenzo or nearby cities such as Newark and Union City over the past several years. However, there are still many small businesses located throughout downtown that have been able to weather these changes relatively unscathed thanks to strong community support and an active business district that continues to thrive despite occasional setbacks such as fires or earthquakes
