The Cost of Living in San Quentin, CA

San Quentin is a small town located in Marin County, California. The population was just over 2,000 as of the 2010 census. It is known for its prison, which houses some of the most notorious criminals in America.

The town was originally built as a railroad stop and military post in 1875. The first prisoners arrived in 1876 and the prison was officially opened two years later. In 1907, San Quentin became the first state prison to be operated by a commission instead of by the state government.

Today, San Quentin is home to both male and female inmates who are serving time for a variety of crimes including murder, rape, robbery, and drug trafficking. The majority of inmates are housed in solitary confinement or “the hole” which is infamous for its extreme temperatures and lack of sunlight.

Despite its notoriety, San Quentin has been able to maintain a strong community presence thanks to its many businesses that cater to inmates and their families. These businesses include restaurants, grocery stores, clothing stores, tattoo parlors, barbershops, beauty salons and even dentists!

While it may not be everyone’s idea of a desirable place to live or work (due to its crime rate), San Quentin is an interesting place that should not be missed if you are ever in the area!
