Sausalito, CA

Sausalito is a small town located in Marin County, California. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. Sausalito is known for its picturesque waterfront location and its many luxury homes. Sausalito is also home to a number of small businesses and restaurants.

The history of Sausalito can be traced back to 1776 when Spanish missionaries established a mission on the site now occupied by the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza. In 1846, General Mariano Vallejo granted Rancho San Miguel to his brother-in-law, José Maria Alviso, who in turn sold it to William Richardson in 1849. Richardson built the first house on the property which he named " Richmond". In 1856, Daniel Freeman purchased Rancho San Miguel from Richardson and began developing what would become Sausalito. He named his development " Sausalito" after the town of Saualitos in Chile.

In 1863, John Bourns purchased Rancho San Miguel from Daniel Freeman and began developing what would become downtown Sausalito. Bourns built several large Victorian homes on his property which are still standing today including The Bourns Mansion (now known as The Pines), The Bourns Cottage (now known as Casa del Mar), and The Bourns Hotel (now known as The Grandview).

In 1887, Charles Crocker acquired Rancho San Miguel from John Bourns and began developing what would become downtown Sausalito into one of Marin County's most fashionable neighborhoods. Crocker built several large mansions on his property including The Crocker House (now known as Villa Crocker), The Crocker Mansion (now known as Casa del Mar), and The Point Reyes Hotel (now known as Point Reyes Lodge).

In 1906, Jock Whitney purchased Rancho San Miguel from Charles Crocker and began developing what would become downtown Sausalito into one of Marin County's most luxurious neighborhoods.
