The city was originally named Nut Tree by its founder, John Sutter. The town was laid out in 1852 on land purchased from Thomas McKay by John Sutter. The first post office opened in 1854. The name was changed to Vacaville in 1868 after the vaca or water cow belonging to General Mariano Vallejo was found near the town site. Vacaville developed as a center for agriculture due to its rich soil and location close to major transportation routes.
