Canterbury is a town located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 36,872. The town is home to Sacred Heart University and the Canterbury Mall.

The area that would become Canterbury was first settled by Europeans in 1637 as part of the Pequot Colony. The town was incorporated in 1785 and named for the English city of Canterbury. In 1814, during the War of 1812, British forces burned down much of the town. The rebuilt town became an important center for trade and commerce due to its location on Route 8 and its proximity to New York City. In 1892, Sacred Heart University opened its doors as a Catholic school in Canterbury.

Today, Canterbury is a thriving community with many businesses and attractions. Its economy is based largely on services such as education and retail sales.
