Milford, CT

Milford is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven– Milford metropolitan area.

The area that became Milford began as a small farming community in the 17th century. The first settlers were Puritans who arrived in 1635 and established a small farmstead on what is now known as High Street. In 1638, they petitioned the General Court of Connecticut for permission to establish a town and were granted permission to do so. The name " Milford" was chosen because it sounded like "Milton", another town in Connecticut that had been settled by Puritans earlier in the century. Milford's early growth was slow due to its remote location and lack of transportation options, but by 1800 it had grown to encompass 1,000 residents.

During the 19th century, Milford experienced rapid growth as an industrial center due to its proximity to New Haven and Stamford (both of which were major cities at the time). This growth led to increased demand for housing and resulted in Milford becoming one of the most densely populated towns in Connecticut by 1900. This increase in population also led to increased problems with overcrowding and pollution; by 1920, Milford had become known as "the dirty little city".

Despite these challenges, Milford continued to grow throughout the 20th century; by 2000, it had reached its current population size of 20,898. Today, Milford remains an important commercial center and tourist destination; according to Forbes magazine, it is one of America's 10 most affordable towns for families with children.

Real estate in Milford consists primarily of single-family homes and apartments; however, there are also a number of condominiums and co-ops available for purchase or rent. Prices for homes range from $200,000 up into the millions (the most expensive home currently listed on Zillow is priced at $10 million). Average monthly rents hover around $1,000 (although this can vary significantly depending on location); overall vacancy rates are low (~3%), which has helped keep prices stable over recent years.

One significant factor affecting real estate prices in Milfords is its proximity to Yale University; many wealthy individuals living in Milfords commute into New Haven each day for work purposes (Yale itself is located just outside of New Haven). As a result of this influx of moneyed individuals (and their associated spending power), properties located near Yale tend to be much more expensive than those located elsewhere within town boundaries – even when taking into account factors such as square footage or distance from public transportation lines."
