The first Europeans to visit what would become Somers were members of the Winthrop Fleet in 1636, when they sailed up the Connecticut River on their way to establish settlements in New England. The first permanent settler in Somers was Ebenezer Chapin who built a cabin on what is now known as Chapin Hill in 1701. In 1768, General Israel Putnam purchased from Ebenezer Chapin and other local landowners an area that would become known as Putnam's Purchase and began developing it into a farm and mill complex which he named " Putnamville". In 1802, General Israel Putnam sold his property to Asa Packer who renamed it "Packerstown".
In 1811, Elijah Burritt purchased from Asa Packer and began developing what would become Burrittsville which he named for himself. Burrittsville remained an agricultural community until after World War II when new housing developments were constructed along Route 7 and Interstate 84 which served as suburban bedroom communities for Hartford residents working in downtown Hartford or Springfield.
In 1975, developer Donald Boudreau acquired approximately 1,000 acres (4 km2) of undeveloped land adjacent to Putnam's Purchase from General Israel Putnam's descendants and began planning what would become Somers Center which today comprises over 4500 homesites with additional commercial development including retail stores, restaurants and offices located within walking distance of each home site. Today Somers Center is one of the largest planned communities in Connecticut with over 10 thousand residents living within its boundaries
