The town was first settled in 1764 by Ebenezer and Jonathan Wallingford. The town was incorporated on March 3, 1795. The town's namesake is Ebenezer Wallingford (1714-1789), one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and a U.S. Representative from Connecticut.
