The history of Haines City can be traced back to 1853 when General Zachary Taylor stopped for the night on his way from Tampa to Washington D.C.. In 1970, Haines City had its first major development with construction of Interstate 4 just outside the city limits; this led to an increase in population by over 50%. By 1990 there were 20,000 people living in Haines City; however this number decreased slightly due to suburbanization throughout Polk County during that time period.
