Hernando is a city located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 47,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city of Hernando was founded in 1887 by John W. Hargrave and his brother-in-law, J.D. Reid on land that had been donated to them by the State of Florida for the establishment of a citrus fruit nursery and agricultural experiment station. The town was named for Manuel de Zepeda y Arteaga, 4th Count of Hernández de Córdoba (1519–1588), governor of Cuba and conqueror of Mexico City who died in 1590 while on an expedition to explore Florida's interior.

As of the censusof 2010, there were 47,527 people residing in the city proper; an increase from 43,814 people who lived there as recorded by the 2000 census. Of this population: 49% were White; 41% were Black or African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from some other race and 3% from two or more races. In terms of ancestry: 25% were German; 16% Irish; 10% English; 6% Italian; 5% Spanish or Hispanic American.

There are also significant populations from Central America (10%), South America (6%), East Asia (3%) and North Africa (2%).

The median age for residents was 36 years old with children under 18 living with their parents at home: 38%.

In terms of marital status: 54 percent were married couples living together; 31 percent had a female householder with no husband present and 9 percent had a male householder with no wife present.

The per capita income for residents was $21,902 which is above both state and national averages.
