The city of Hernando was founded in 1887 by John W. Hargrave and his brother-in-law, J.D. Reid on land that had been donated to them by the State of Florida for the establishment of a citrus fruit nursery and agricultural experiment station. The town was named for Manuel de Zepeda y Arteaga, 4th Count of Hernández de Córdoba (1519–1588), governor of Cuba and conqueror of Mexico City who died in 1590 while on an expedition to explore Florida's interior.
