Lake Placid, FL

Lake Placid is a small town located in Osceola County, Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area.

The town was founded in 1892 by George W. Placid and named for Lake Placid, New York, where he had been born and raised. The town's first business was a general store. In 1903, the railroad came to Lake Placid and began to bring tourists to the area. In 1911, a hotel was built and soon after that several other businesses followed suit.

In 1915, Lake Placid became incorporated as a city with a population of 1,500 people. At that time there were only two streets: Main Street and Broadway Avenue (now known as Palm Avenue). The city's first mayor was A.J .Moffat who served until 1916 when he resigned to become postmaster of the town.

During World War II many men from Lake Placid enlisted in the military and many women worked in factories to support their families while they were away at war. After the war ended many of these veterans returned home and started new businesses which helped fuel growth in the city.

Today Lake Placid is still an active community with many businesses serving its residents and tourists alike including restaurants, motels/hotels/condos/apartments, shops/stores (including an outlet mall), banks/credit unions, gas stations/convenience stores etc., etc.. There are also several recreational opportunities available such as fishing (both salt water and freshwater), golfing (both public courses within close proximity as well as private clubs), skiing (within close proximity) snowboarding etc., etc..
