Lehigh Acres, FL

Lehigh Acres is a city located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 25,872 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Myers- Cape Coral Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city was founded in 1926 and named for Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, which donated land for the town's development. The company had been formed in 1902 by George W. Lehigh and other investors to exploit coal reserves near what is now Cape Coral. The company built a railroad to transport coal from mines near Cape Coral to markets in Florida and Georgia. In 1926, the town was incorporated as Lehigh Acres with a population of about 1,000 people.

The city's economy has been based on agriculture (particularly citrus) since its founding; however, it has also developed into a major tourist destination due to its proximity to both Naples and Fort Myers Beach. Tourism has played an important role in the city's growth over the years; according to the City of Lehigh Acres website, "In 2006 alone...the City generated $35 million dollars from tourism."
