Ormond Beach is a city located in Volusia County, Florida. The population was estimated to be 36,890 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Deltona– Daytona Beach– Ormond Beach, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1926 and named for Ormond Plantation, which was originally settled by the British in 1763. The area now known as Ormond Beach was originally part of a tract of land given to Colonel George Sinclair by King George II. In 1885, John Wesley Dabney and his wife Lillie opened a hotel on the beachfront that would later become Dabney's Inn. The hotel became a popular stop for travelers on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and hosted many notable guests including President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Hollywood stars such as Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks Jr..
In 1926, local developer A.E. "Ace" Taylor purchased land along the Atlantic Ocean for $10 an acre from Colonel Sinclair and began developing what would become Ormond Beach into one of Florida's most popular resort towns with its wide sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, lush tropical gardens and palm-lined streets lined with elegant Victorian homes built by some of Florida's wealthiest families including the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers and Carnegies.
Today Ormond Beach is home to some of Florida's most luxurious resorts including The Breakers®, Sandals Emerald Bay®, The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Eagle Ridge®, Trump National Golf Club West Palm Beach®, Trump International Hotel & Tower® Orlando® (formerly known as Trump Plaza), Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa®, Siesta Key Resort & Club®, Atlantis Paradise Island Resort® (formerly known as The Ritz-Carlton Nassau Bahamas)and Marriott Vacation Club Grand Cypress*. There are also numerous shopping venues including world-renowned designer stores like Neiman Marcus*, Saks Fifth Avenue*and Nordstrom Rack*, upscale restaurants like Ruth’s Chris Steak House*and Wolfgang Puck*and beautiful beaches like Daytona State Park*.
The city has been designated an All American City four times since 1978 – most recently in 2016 – making it one of only nine cities nationwide to receive this distinction.*
Ormond Beach is also home to two professional sports teams: the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team who play at Amway Center just north of downtown; and the Daytona 500 NASCAR race weekend held each year at Daytona International Speedway just east of town on International Speedway Boulevard.*
Real estate in Ormond Beach is highly sought after due to its close proximity to both Orlando (just over an hour away) and Miami (just over three hours away). As a result there are typically very few homes available for sale or rent within city limits - especially during peak season - which can lead to long waiting periods *or even no availability at all*. In addition, because so many people live here full time or visit frequently for vacation it can be difficult for locals or visitors not familiar with the area to find housing that meets their needs or budget.*
