Palm Harbor, FL

Palm Harbor is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,898. Palm Harbor is a popular tourist destination due to its location on Clearwater Bay and its many golf courses. The city's economy is based largely on tourism and real estate.

The first Europeans to visit Palm Harbor were the Spanish in 1565. The area was part of a large tract of land that was given to Juan Ponce de León by the native Calusa Indians. In 1885, Henry Flagler built his railroad line through what is now Palm Harbor. This line made it possible for tourists to come to the area and enjoy the beautiful beaches and turquoise waters of Clearwater Bay.

In 1916, John Dossett built what is now known as The Breakers hotel on Clearwater Beach. This hotel became very popular with wealthy vacationers from all over the country. In 1927, developer Harry Chandler built what is now known as The Biltmore Hotel next door to The Breakers. This hotel became one of Palm Harbor's most famous landmarks and remains open today as a luxury resort property.

During World War II, Palm Harbor was home to Naval Air Station Clearwater which served as a training ground for pilots who were fighting in Europe and Asia theaters of war. After World War II ended, Naval Air Station Clearwater was closed down and most of its personnel were transferred back home to civilian life. However, some elements of Naval Air Station Clearwater remained in Palm Harbor until 1970 when they were finally relocated to NAS Jacksonville in Jacksonville Beach .

The development of golf courses played an important role in the growth of Palm Harbor during the early 1900s . In 1922, developer Averell Harriman opened his first golf course - Harriman Golf Club - which quickly became one of Florida's most popular courses . By 1930 there were nine golf courses operating in Palm harbor .

Today there are thirteen golf courses located within city limits , including two championship-level facilities - Harbour Town Golf Links & Spa and TPC Tampa Bay at JW Marriott St Petersburg/ Clearwater .

Palm Harbour also has several tennis courts , including two public courts - Tennis Center at Palms Park (formerly known as Tennis Courts at Southpoint) and Tennis Center at Gulfport Village (formerly known as Gulfport Tennis Club). There are also several private tennis clubs located within city limits .
