Saint Petersburg is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 191,521 at the 2010 census. Saint Petersburg is the county seat of Pinellas County and is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater metropolitan area.

The city was founded on July 15, 1892 by John S. Templeman and Henry Plant, two businessmen from Clearwater who were looking for a place to build a railroad depot and shipyards. The original name chosen for the city was "Pinehurst", but this was changed after Plant's wife suggested " Saint Petersburg" as it sounded more Russian than Clearwater. The city began to grow rapidly after World War I as businesses moved in to take advantage of the naval base and shipbuilding facilities that were available. By 1925, Saint Petersburg had reached its present population of over 200,000 people.

Today, Saint Petersburg is an important commercial center with a diverse economy that includes both traditional businesses such as insurance companies and manufacturing plants as well as newer enterprises such as technology companies and biotechnology firms. The city has also developed into a major tourist destination due to its beautiful architecture and waterfront location along Tampa Bay. In addition, Saint Petersburg is home to several notable educational institutions including the University of South Florida (USF) which was founded in 1967 and is one of the largest universities in Florida with over 50,000 students enrolled at campuses throughout Tampa Bay Area including USF St Pete Beach which opened in 2013 adjacent to Clearwater Marine Aquarium making it one of only two universities with an aquarium on campus (the other being University Of California - Santa Barbara).
