The town of Yankeetown was founded in 1887 by James and Lillie Yankey. The town was named after the nearby Yankey River, which in turn was named after an Indian chief who lived near the river. The first business in Yankeetown was a general store operated by James and Lillie Yankey. In 1889, the first post office opened in Yankeetown and it operated until 1907.

In 1890, the railroad came to Yankeetown and began to develop the town as a commercial center for Volusia County. By 1900, there were several businesses in Yankeetown including a bank, hotel, drugstore, bakery, hardware store, meat market and several other stores. The population of Yankeetown grew rapidly during this time due to the development of tourism as an industry.
