Cohutta is a small town in the Cohutta Mountains of northeast Georgia. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Cohutta area was first settled in 1806 by James and John Cohutta, who were Cherokee Indians. The town was named for them. In 1824, Cohutta became part of the newly formed Macon County. The early economy depended on agriculture and timber production. In 1892, a railroad was built through the area and stimulated growth in the town. Manufacturing also began to develop in Cohutta during this time, including a cotton mill and a shoe factory.
Today, most economic activity in Cohutta revolves around tourism and real estate development. The town has several historic homes that are open to visitors; these include the James Pugh House (c1850), which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and the Samuel Hodge House (c1860), which is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are also several bed-and-breakfasts located in Cohutta, as well as several restaurants and shops catering to tourists.
Real estate development has been an important part of Cahuttas economy for many years now.
