Douglas Home Prices Continue to Rise

Douglas is a city located in the northeast corner of Douglas County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,829. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Douglas is home to The Villages at Douglas Crossing and The Villages at Stonecrest.

The city was founded in 1892 by Dr. James Hogg and his wife Mary Ann as a small cotton plantation town on land donated by General James Oglethorpe. In 1916, it became incorporated as a town with 1,500 residents and was renamed for General William Tecumseh Sherman after his victory in the Battle of Atlanta during the American Civil War. In 1921, it annexed portions of unincorporated areas to its east and south and grew rapidly to 10,000 residents by 1930. It continued to grow through annexation of additional land until reaching its present size in 1940.

During World War II, Douglas served as a military base for training pilots for combat duty in Europe and Asia. After the war ended, Douglas experienced significant growth due to its proximity to Atlanta and its status as one of Georgia's first suburbs; it reached 25,000 residents by 1950. This growth slowed somewhat after Interstate 85 was built through suburban Atlanta in the late 1960s; Douglas' population peaked at 33,000 in 1970 but has since declined slightly to 29,000 as of 2010 census figures.

Today Douglas is an affluent suburb characterized by well-maintained homes on large lots with excellent schools; however there has been some recent development near I-85 which has increased traffic congestion within the city limits during peak hours
