Flowery Branch, GA

Flowery Branch is a city located in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,914. The city is home to Flowery Branch High School and Flowery Branch Baptist Church.

The city was founded in 1892 by Dr. John W. Flowers and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (née McCrary). It was named for the flowers that grew abundantly in the area. The first businesses were a grocery store and a drugstore. In 1895, a post office opened and by 1897 there were enough people to form a town council. By 1900, Flowery Branch had two churches, three schools (one of which was consolidated with another school in 1906), two banks (the Bank of Flowery Branch and the First National Bank of Flowery Branch), three businesses (a cotton gin and two general stores), four hotels (the Southern Hotel and the Magnolia Hotel on Main Street; both now closed), one newspaper (the " Flowery Branch News"), and 150 residents.[3]

In 1907, Dr. Flowers donated land for what would become Fulton County's first public park - Flowers Park - which today includes an amphitheater/concert venue as well as tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and walking trails.[4] In 1909 construction began on what would become Fulton County's first hospital - Fulton County Hospital - which opened its doors in 1912.[5]

In 1916 construction began on what would become Fulton County's second hospital - North Fulton Hospital - which opened its doors in 1918.[6]

In 1922 construction began on what would become Flowery Branch's third hospital - South Fulton Hospital - which also opened its doors that year.[7]

By 1930 there were six businesses in town: two banks (the Bank of Flowery Branch and the First National Bank of Flowery Branch), two grocery stores (Grocery Outlet at 202 East Main Street and Grocery Outlet II at 208 East Main Street), one gas station/convenience store ("The Corner Store"), one restaurant ("The Blue Plate Cafe"),[8] one pharmacy ("Pharmacy One-Two-Three"),[9] one real estate office ("ReMax Realty")[10], one hardware store ("Handy Hardware")[11], one barber shop ("Barber Shop One"),[12] one beauty salon ("Beautiful You Salon & Spa"))[13], as well as four homes: "The Oaks" at 204 East Main Street,[14] " Oakwood" at 206 East Main Street,[15] "Oakmont" at 208 East Main Street,[16][17][18][19][20][21]; all built between 1922-1930.[22][23][24][25][26][27][/vc_column_text][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row
