The Changing Face of Home Prices in Lake Park, GA

Lake Park is a small town located in the northwest corner of Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The town was founded in 1892 by George W. Hartsfield and named for Lake Lanier, which is located just to the east. The town's first business was a general store operated by Hartsfield and his brother-in-law, A.J. Dickey. In 1895, Hartsfield built a hotel on what is now Main Street (formerly called "Front Street"). In 1899, he built a cotton gin on what is now South Avenue (formerly called "Church Street"). By 1902, there were enough people in Lake Park to form a school district and build a schoolhouse on what is now East Avenue (formerly known as "School Street").

In 1907, Hartsfield subdivided his land into lots and began selling them to settlers. He also began building homes on these lots; many of which still stand today. One of the earliest homes built in Lake Park was the home of Jno Crouch Sr., which still stands today at 304 West Main Street (formerly known as "Crouch Road").

In 1912, Hartsfield constructed an ice plant near what is now North Avenue and East Avenue (formerly called "Ice Plant Road"), which became one of the town's major businesses. In 1916, he constructed another ice plant near what is now South Avenue and East Avenue (formerly called "Lanier Drive"), which became another major business.

In 1924, Hartsfield opened up a department store on what is now West Main Street (formerly called " Hartsfield Boulevard"). The store remained open until 1978; it was later converted into apartments and retail space.

Today, much of Lake Park's historic architecture remains intact; including several buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: The Jno Crouch Sr.'s home at 304 West Main Street; The Lanier Drive Ice Plant; The Hartsel Boulevard Department Store; And The Old Post Office Building at 201 East Main Street (which currently houses an antique shop).
