Leesburg is a city located in the north-central part of Fulton County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,936. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The city's name is derived from its founder, James Lees.

The first European settlers arrived in what is now Leesburg in 1821. James Lees and his brother-in-law William Coxe were among these early pioneers. They established a plantation on land that now makes up much of downtown Leesburg. In 1825, they built a sawmill on the Chattahoochee River near what is now Lake Lanier National Recreation Area to serve as a source of lumber for their plantation buildings and other businesses in the area. The mill operated until 1906.

Leesburg prospered as an agricultural community through most of the 19th century. Cotton was king in this region and farmers grew crops such as cotton, corn, wheat and oats on large plantations owned by wealthy planters like James Lees and William Coxe. However, by 1900 industrialization was beginning to take hold in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia and this began to change things for Leesburg's economy. Railroads were built through town bringing new jobs and businesses with them; factories started producing textiles, furniture and other products; and tourists began coming to see all that Atlanta had to offer – including its many attractions related to architecture (such as Peachtree Street). This sudden influx of new people and businesses led to rapid growth for Leesburg – from 1,000 residents in 1900 to 10,000 by 1920 – making it one of Fulton County's largest cities at that time.

However, even with all this growth there were still some aspects of life here that reflected traditional southern values: for example, African Americans were not allowed into downtown until after World War II (although they could live anywhere else within town). And while women eventually gained equal rights with men here (and throughout much of America), they continued to be largely confined to roles within the home until well into the 20th century – something that can still be seen today in some ways (for example, there are relatively few female business owners here).

Today things are very different for Leesburg than they were when James Lees first arrived more than two centuries ago: it is now one of Fulton County's fastest-growing cities thanks largely to its strong economic base based primarily on services (particularly healthcare) but also including manufacturing (particularly automotive manufacturing), tourism/ recreation/ hospitality industries (such as lodging/restaurants) and education/research facilities (including several universities). And while there are still some aspects unique to this small southern town – like its long history as an agricultural community – overall life here has become much more complex than it ever was before due mainly to changes brought about by globalization
