Tunnel Hill is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in northeast Georgia. The town was founded in 1892 by a group of miners who discovered coal deposits near the town. Tunnel Hill quickly became a major coal mining center and grew rapidly as a result. By 1920, the population had reached 1,500 and by 1930, it had reached 5,000.
The coal industry declined sharply after World War II and by 1970, only 10 percent of the workforce was employed in mining. However, Tunnel Hill still managed to maintain its status as a small town due to its strong agricultural economy and its proximity to Atlanta. In 1990, Tunnel Hill passed through another major transition when it became incorporated as a city.
Today, Tunnel Hill is an economically diverse community that is home to businesses such as insurance companies, banks, restaurants and retail stores. The city also has a strong educational system that includes two colleges and several schools. The population of Tunnel Hill has continued to grow over the past few years and currently stands at around 17,000 people.
