Mounds, IL

Mounds is a small town located in Mc Henry County, Illinois. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Crystal Lake, IL- Mc Henry County, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Mounds was founded in 1858 by James and Eliza (Baker) Mounds. The town was named for a mound of earth that stood on the site of what is now Main Street. The first business in Mounds was a general store operated by James Mounds and his brother-in-law, John Baker. In 1871, J.C. Ketcham opened a hardware store which became one of the town's most successful businesses. In 1898, A.D. Smith built the first brick building in Mounds and began operating a grocery store which he later expanded into a general merchandise store and then into a department store which he operated until his death in 1951.

Today, Mounds is home to several businesses including an antique mall, two banks (one locally owned and one national chain), two restaurants (a pizza place and an Italian restaurant), two gas stations/convenience stores (one locally owned and one national chain), three churches (two Protestant denominations and one Catholic church), four convenience stores/gas stations (two locally owned and two national chains), three hair salons/spas (two independently owned salons and one salon franchised from another location), two insurance agencies (one locally owned insurance agency and one national chain insurance company), three law offices (two independently owned law firms and one law office franchised from another location) as well as several small businesses such as jewelers, florists, furniture stores etc...

The majority of residential properties are single family homes although there are also some duplexes scattered throughout the community...
