Palmyra, IL

Palmyra is a small town located in Will County, Illinois. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Palmyra is home to the Palmyra Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The first settlers arrived in what is now Palmyra in 1835. The town was founded by Jesse and Levi Cook and named for their hometown of Palmyra, New York. The town's early economy was based on agriculture and milling; however, by the late 19th century Palmyra had become a center for coal mining and manufacturing.
