Palos Hills is a suburban community located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 48,851 at the 2010 census. Palos Hills is located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and is bordered by Maywood to the north, Berwyn to the east, Oak Lawn to the south and Harwood Heights to the west.
The first settlers arrived in Palos Hills in 1871. The community was originally known as "Palo Alto" after a nearby hill that was once home to a Mexican rancho. In 1892, Palos Hills became an incorporated village and changed its name to " Palos Hills." The name was chosen because it sounded like "palace hills."
Today, Palos Hills is one of Cook County's most affluent suburbs. Its residents are well-educated and have high incomes. Many of them work in downtown Chicago or in nearby suburbs such as Oak Lawn or Berwyn. However, there has been a recent trend of people moving into Palos Hills from other parts of Illinois and even other parts of the United States. This is likely due to its many amenities – including excellent schools, low crime rates, plenty of shopping and dining options and easy access to major highways – as well as its relatively low cost of living compared with other areas in Illinois or nationwide.
Real estate in Palos Hills consists mainly of single-family homes on large lots. Most homes are built between 1950 and 1970; however, there are also some newer homes available. Prices for homes range from around $200,000 for modestly sized houses up into the millions for larger estates or mansions. There are also a number of condominiums available; however, these tend to be more expensive than traditional single-family homes.
