Pomona is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 10,898 as of the 2010 census. Pomona is located in eastern Illinois just east of the city of Bloomington and just west of the city of Decatur.
The history of Pomona can be traced back to 1837 when settler James Fenton platted the town on land that he had purchased from the state government. The first buildings were erected in 1839 and by 1840, Pomona had a population of about 100 people. In 1851, Pomona became an incorporated village and by 1870, it had a population of 1,500 people. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Pomona experienced significant growth due to its location on railroad lines connecting Chicago with Springfield and St Louis. By 1910, Pomona had a population of 3,000 people and by 1920, it had reached its peak at 4,000 people. However, after World War II ended and rail traffic declined significantly throughout Illinois, Pomona's population began to decline steadily until it reached its current level of 10,898 people as of 2010 census.
Today, most economic activity in Pomona revolves around retail sales and services related to transportation (i.e., trucking). However, there are also a number of small businesses that provide goods or services not typically found in larger towns or cities (i.e., a bakery that specializes in gluten-free breads). Additionally, there is some manufacturing activity taking place within the town limits (primarily related to automotive parts). Finally,, there is also some light industrial activity taking place near the edge of town near Interstate 57
