Saint Joseph is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Saint Joseph County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,913. It is the fourth-most populous city in Illinois after Chicago, Springfield and Peoria. Saint Joseph was founded on July 4, 1809 by French fur trader Pierre Laclede as a trading post on the Missouri River. The city became known as "The Gateway to the West" because it was one of the first settlements in what would become Iowa and Nebraska Territory.
