Salem, IL

Salem is a city located in the state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 50,715. Salem is the county seat of Marion County and is home to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The city's economy is based largely on its status as a regional center for health care and higher education. Salem has been recognized as one of the most livable cities in America by Forbes magazine.

Real estate in Salem has always been an important part of its economy. In 1836, John Aiken purchased land north of town which would become known as Aiken Park. This area became home to many wealthy businessmen and politicians over the years, including J.P Morgan and William Jennings Bryan. In 1892, George Pullman built his first railroad car factory in Salem and began employing hundreds of people from throughout Marion County. The Pullman Company played an important role in developing Salem into what it is today; it remains one of the largest employers in town today.
